At the beginning of October Fifth Form GCSE musicians showcased their exceptional talents in a superb recital. Held in the Music School Hall, the students performed their solo pieces for GCSE, making the most of this opportunity to record their coursework submissions as they embark on their final year.

In GCSE Music, 60% of the students’ final grade comes from coursework. This includes 30% from their two composition pieces, and another 30% based on performance—one solo piece and one ensemble performance. Over the two-year course, students dedicate themselves to practicing and perfecting their pieces, aiming to submit performances of the highest standard.

This cohort delivered a remarkable recital, demonstrating the hard work they put into refining their performances over the summer. The concert opened with a lyrical musical theatre song from The Secret Garden and concluded with an energetic rendition of No Diggity by Blackstreet. While these two pieces represent more contemporary music, the programme also featured works by Shostakovich, Beethoven, and Pescetti. The performances included a variety of instruments, with numerous pianists, as well as musicians on trumpet, voice, and drums.

This concert offered a unique opportunity for the students to perform for one another, outside the classroom, and to support each other as fellow musicians.

Keep up to date with Hurst!

A heartfelt thank you to all the students for a wonderful evening of music, and to everyone who attended to support this talented group. Cyrus Dean, Head of Academic Music
